About Empire LevelThe history of Empire is synonomous with the modern level itself. Henry Ziemann, a master carpenter, founded the Empire Level Manufacturing Corporation in 1919 by inventing the first level with replaceable bubble vials. Ziemann's son Harry was responsible for developing the torpedo level. When pharmacist Donald Wright married into the business in 1953, even he probably could not have foreseen that he would continue this tradition of innovation, patenting the first permanently embedded single-bubble vial, an innovation that would forever change the way levels were built, and later introducing the magnetic level, the top-reading level, the first all-plastic level, and the grade lines on bubble levels for reading pitch angles.
Empire now holds 30 patents and claims more improvements to this simple yet essential tool than any other manufacturer.
Today Empire Level is the leading designer and producer of levels, squares, layout tools and caution tape in the United States with dominant market share in the retail, contractor supply, and "Do-It-Yourself" mar

Customer Reviews
Great value for the price and dead accurate. Ideal for construction pros, carpenters and wood workers. If you are a tool and die maker journeyman, you already have Starret or other brand unique to your trade. Some may quibble over the 1/8" markings, but come on now, who can't guestimate to a sixteenth between two well etched marks? What tips the scale is the stainless steel blade. We've all had that "Oh ;%!" moment realizing that an ordinary steel square got left outside in the damp on a construction site.

Accurate, square and true right out of the package... nice quality for the very reasonable price paid. You can buy a much "fancier" unit, but unless you're made of money and just "have" to have the $70 you-know-who model, save your cash and buy other shop essentials with the money saved! I'd like to highlight another feature... the 'True Blue' level vial is VERY easy to read and is a nice feature. The blade's square-channel groove is a sign of a high-quality tool; it keeps the blade true to the stock. P.S.-- a drop or three of light machine oil on the blade will smooth the action, and help prevent rusting. Got this tool fast via Amazon, got the best price, and I'm very happy!
